I decided to write on Natsume's Harvest Moon 64, which is a deeply involving simulation of farm life, including annual festivals, planting and selling crops, raising livestock, ect. Read on and enjoy. -Version 1.0- 12/29/1999 **Initial document which I plan on updating when I get more information -Version 1.1- 1/4/2000 **I discovered the name of the botonist and changed it in the characters section **Added Cliff to the characters section **New Hammer Function added **Information on Popuri added **Added information on strawberries **Added information on the Greenhouse **New Plot shaped added **NEW recipe section **More pointers **NEW section for those who have contributed ======================================================================== ===== The Story ======================================================================== ===== You are Jack, who inherits the farm after your grandfather dies. You must turn a run-down farm into a productive buisness while handling a social life at the same time! What makes things worse is that you only have 300G, a couple of tools, and the desire to succeed to do it. Are you up for the challenge? ======================================================================== ===== The Characters ======================================================================== ===== Harvest Moon is loaded with characters (over 50) that each have their own personality and even though i do not know all of their names, I will do my best to list them all here. Maria--The mayors daughter (as mentioned earlier) and one of the 5 girls whom you can marry. Elli--the baker's daughter and another girl that you can marry. Popuri--the daughter of the florist owner and another girl who you can marry. Ann--the daughter of the ranch owner and another girl who you can marry. Karen--the daughter of the vineyard owner and another girl who you can marry. Ann's Brother--Not very talkative and very hard to please Ranch Owner--Owns the Green Ranch and sells livestock, he is the father of Ann. Lillia--Owns the Florist and is the mother of Popuri, visit her to buy vegetable, grass, and flower seeds. Rick--Owns the Tool Shop come to him when you need to buy extras for you livestock. Elli's Father--the master baker who owns the bakery and obviously, the father of Elli. Potion Shop owner--sells potions to you, if you have an empty bottle, you can often find him in the cave whenever his shop is closed. The Buyer--comes to your ranch every day at 5 o'clock to collect the day's harvest. Vineyard Owner--owns the vinyard at the base of Moon Mountain and is the father of Karen. Kai--works at the vineyard (the purple guy) and a good friend of Karen. Master Fisherman--Lives in a tent on Moon Mountain, come to him to get a fishing rod. Carpenters--there are two of these that work for the master carpenter. Elves--there are 3 elves, i still do not know what they do. Harris--the village mailman Bar Owner--Owns the local bar (you could have probably guessed that) May--one of the three children Kent--one of the three children Stu--one of the three children Pastor--Works in the church. Gives services on Sunday and educates the children during the weekdays. Midwife--knows a lot about children and is the mother of the buyer. Saibara--the artisan, he has a shop next to the Tool Shop Old Lady--always sits in a rocking chair next to the bakery, i'm not sure but I think this is Elli's grandmother. Maria's Mother--the mother of Maria and wife of the mayor, you can find her in the mayor's house. Karen's Mother--never has a lot to say, find her in the vineyard house most of the time. Old Mountain Man--Lives on the summit of Moon Mountain at the restaurant Old Mountain Woman--Lives on the summit of Moon Mountain at the restaurant Bug-catcher--appears on Moon Mountain during the second year, he is looking for a rare bug. Basil the Botonist--Popuri's father and Lillia's wife, he stays three months out of they year and goes out of town during the winter. Cliff--A person who travels with his bird, Cain. He shows up on your doorstep in the spring after the Planting Festival, give him food. ======================================================================== ===== The Controls ======================================================================== ===== The N64 Controller has a total of 12 buttons. In Harvest Moon 64, 11 of these 12 have specific functions, which are listed below. L and R buttons--rotates the view of your farm Start Button--Brings up the backpack screen and stops the game clock Analog Stick--use this to move your character around during the game Z Button--if you press the Z Button, a small sub-screen will appear and give you information on the selected item A Button--this button will let you talk, open doors, give or throw selected items, and select menu choices B Button--Press this to use the tool that you are holding C Up--Place item into backpack C Right--Call Dog C Down--Eat item that you are holding C Left--Call Horse ======================================================================== ===== Items and Tools ======================================================================== ===== There are many items at your disposal in Harvest Moon 64, each with it's own purpose. To use an item, select it from the backpack menu (start) and press the appropriate button (either A or B). When you get stronger tools (indicated by their color) hold down the tool button (B) for a more powerfull strike/swing, however, keep in mind that Watering Can--You will probably use this the most because, as you probably guessed, is used to water your crops everyday. To fill it, go to the spring on the upper right-hand corner of your field and use the can. Like all tools, the Watering can has 3 stages, the first lets you water a single plant, the second lets you water a single row of three plants, and the last lets you water a 3x3 patch of plants. Sickle--This is the tool that you will use to cut your grass. When the grass reaches the point when it is ready to cut, simply walk up to it and use the sickle. The grass, if it is ready to cut, will dissapear into the silo for later use. The sickle has three stages, the first lets you cut a single patch of grass, the second a single row of grass, and the final lets you cut a 3x3 patch of grass. Axe--Use this to chop wooden stumps found on your early farm and on Moon Mountain. The axe is simple to use, just walk up to the stump and use it. The axe has three stages, the first can chop a stump in 6 hits, the second can chop a stump in 2 hits, and the third it can chop a stump in 1 hit. Hammer--The hammer is good for bashing rocks and broken fence. Just walk up to it and wham!, you have yourself bare ground. The hammer has three stages (noticing a pattern in the tools yet?) The first can bash a rock in 6 hits, the second can bash a big rock in 2 hits, and the third can bash a big rock in 2 hit. The hammer can also be used to return soil to its original state by bashing tilled soil. Hoe--One of the more versitle tools, the hoe can be used to till the ground, reclaim ground from grass and seed, and mine. To till the ground, walk up to a bare spot in your field, and use the hoe. This should provide you with a spot in which you can plant seed. Now lets say you plant seed or grass and you don't want it. See all those dots in the ground? Simply go to one and use the hoe and it will return to it original tilled condition. In order to reclaim a field from grass that has already started to grow, you must first cut it (you might have to wait) and then you can use the hoe to retun it to a tilled field. In the winter you will have the option of mining to get money. It is absolutly necessary that you have the hoe for this (otherwise you will waste a day) Mining is just like tilling the field, simply find a bare spot and use the hoe to reveal whats beneth. Fishing Rod--You can get this from the master fisherman on Moon Mountain. It is rather complicated to use, but after you get the hang of it, it becomes surprisingly fun as a time filler. Walk up to a fishing spot (the fisherman's pond, the river, or the dock at the beach) and hold the tool button (B) continue to hold this until the bobber (the thing in the water) moves. Just as soon as it starts to move, release it, if you do it quick enough, you will catch a fish, if not, try again. Mountain Fruit--Their are several different fruits depending on the season. They can be found in various locations on moon mountain, such as the area around the carpenter's hut and somewhere near the fisherman's tent. Vegetable Seeds--These will produce the bulk of your profit during the game, each one takes a certain amount of time to produce goods so for more information, look below. Flower Seeds--These will produce flowers, however, you cannot sell them for money and are used mostly for the cosmetic effect. Herbs--There are two kinds, edible and medicinal. Both are found on Moon Mountain and both can be either eaten or sold. Flowers--You can find wild flowers on Moon Mountain. You can not sell wild flowers, however, you can give them as a gift. Bottle--You can buy the bottle at the Flower Festivle in the Spring. It is used to hold potions and medicines from the potion shop. The Bell--You get one of these free when you purchase your first cow or sheep. You use it to call the livestock toward your location. Brush--You use this to brush your cows and sheep. Simply select the brush, walk to the animal and use. Buy from the tool shop Milker--You use this to obtain milk from cows. To use, simply walk to the cow and use. Buy from the tool shop Shears--Used to shear wool from a sheep. You can use this item just as you would use the milker. Buy from the tool shop Cattle Feed--Whenever you keep a cow inside, you would generally feed it the grass that you cut, however, if you happen to run out you can buy this from the rancher and use it to feed your cattle instead Chicken Feed--Whenever you keep a chicken inside, you must feed it this feed. You can purchase it at the rancher's. Medicine--Whenever a cow or sheep gets sick, use this medicine that you buy at the Green Ranch to cure it, because sickness can happen often, keep some of this handy at all times. Cow Potion--This can be used to make a cow reproduce, walk up to the animal and use this. 21 days later, you will have a baby calf. Buy at t the ranchers. Fish--You get these by fishing and they come in three different sizes, small, medium, and large. Each one is worth a different amount. Power Berries--You obtain these in different ways and they will give you more overall energy (meaning you can work longer and harder) Ocarina--Buy one for the Spirit Festival Blue Feather--Present this to the girl you like after the heart in the dialoge box is pink. Grass Seed--This can be purchased from the florist and planted in the spring and summer. Although you cannot plant it in the fall, it can be harvested. For best results, plant in 3x3 plots side by side. ======================================================================== ===== Livestock and other animals ======================================================================== ===== Livestock is another way to make a lot of money. In Harvest Moon 64, there are 3 different animals: Cows, chickens, and sheep. All of these animals require one thing in order to produce--food. However, if you want only the best milk and the highest quality wool, you must also brush and talk to your cows and sheep daily. Also, it is a good idea to keep your livestock outside on sunny days during the spring, summer, and fall so that they do not eat all of your grass store. Cows--you buy these at the Green Ranch at a price of 6000G. It takes several game weeks of continuous care for them to start producing milk, and in order to obtain the most expensive milk, you must continue giving them the same care for as long as you have them. Sheep--you but these at the Green Ranch at a price of 4000G. Like the cows it takes time and care for them to start producing and continual care is needed to ensure excellent quality. Chickens--you but these at the Green Ranch for 1500G. They require food everyday and when they are kept inside, you must feed them chicken feed. They require time to start producing. Your horse--you can get this from the Green Ranch during the first spring by walking to the leftmost field and saying yes to everything that you are asked. Once he grows up, you will be able to use him as a mobile shipping box. Mountain animals--find these running around the mountain during different seasons. Ann really likes them. ======================================================================== ===== The Festivals ======================================================================== ===== There are many festivals in Harvest Moon 64, and you should attend ALL of them, regardless of the day's harvest. In fact, you shouldn't harvest at all on the day of a festival, only water the plants that need it, then go straight to the square, beach, or ranch. ***NOTE: I appologize that i don't know too much about the festivals and I will post more about them in later updates** Spring 8--Planting Festival--The villagers gather to wish for a great harvest before the planting season. It is tradition for the "King" to fly in a balloon while the other villagers release balloons filled with seed. Spring 17--Horse Race--You can wager medals and even race on this day. Spring 18-22--Although this isn't a festival, you need to vote for the girl you plan to marry at the town square. Spring 23--Flower Festival--The girls dress up as the goddess. Dance with the girl that you want to marry. Summer 1--Fireworks display on the first day of summer. You may find the girl you want to marry at this festival. Summer 9--Vegetable Festival--Bring a vegetable to the mayor on this day Summer 17--Firefly Festival--Villagers place lighted lanterns at the beach and watch them float away. Summer 24--Sea Festival--a swim competition, fun even though the prize isn't great. Fall 4--Cow Festival--Villagers judge which cow is the best Fall 12--Harvest Festival--The mayor declares the "King of the Harvest" there is dancing, so choose to dance with the girl you want to marry. Fall 20--Egg Festival--You get to run around town searching for the correct egg, the prize is worth it though. Fall 28--Horse Race--Just like the one in the Spring. Winter 10--Thanksgiving--Villagers gather to give thanks for the harvest Winter 19--Dog Race--Same concept as the horse races, except with dogs Winter 24--Stary Night--Watch shooting stars with the girl you like Winter 27--Spirit Festival--Villagers gather to wish all of the bad spirits away. Winter 30--New Years Eve--Find out where the girl you like is going to be and go there that night. ======================================================================== ===== The Girls ======================================================================== ===== There are five different girls to court in Harvest Moon 64, and each one has their own interests. As you present a girl with gifts and spend time with her, the heart on the dialog box will change colors from white, to blue, to green, to yellow, to pink. Also, I am pretty sure that you need to have you house upgraded in order to get married. Once the heart is pink and you have a completely upgraded house, you can purchase a blue feather from the tool shop and give it to her. You will get married the following sunday. ***NOTE: Once again I have to appologize because I have only married one girl and discovered her interests, I will post more as I learn more.*** Karen--Karen is the daughter of the vineyard owner. She enjoys wild berries from the mountain. I personnally believe that she is the easiest to get to like you because she can be found at night on most days, at the bar where she works. You can increase her popularity toward you by befriending, Kai, the purple guy who works at the vineyard. Popuri--Popuri is the daughter of the florist and likes really loves flowers. She loves it when you plant lots of flowers on your farm, especially the Blue Mist Flower. Maria--Don't know too much. She is the mayors daughter and works at the library, bring her small gifts such as flowers and bugs. Elli--The baker's daughter. She really likes it when you purchase and eat good from the bakery, making her a very expensive investment. She also seems to like it when you give her eggs and milk. Ann--The owner of Green Ranch's daughter, she likes animals from the mountain ======================================================================== ===== The Seeds ======================================================================== ===== There are 7 types of seed in Harvest Moon 64, each have different growing times. ***NOTE: I know you are getting tired of these, but i've never measured the time it takes to grow these plants, but i am in the process of this timing as you read this, look for future updates for this information. Also, I don't have a greenhouse yet, so I can't find out anything about the winter crop, only that I know one exists.*** ----Spring Crops 200G/Bag---- Spring crops have only one harvest/bag Turnips--have the shortest growing period and because they make so little, I suggest that you only plant them toward the end of the season after it is too late to plant anything else. (60G/crop) Potatos--they have the second shortest growing period, and their modest selling price makes them the best investment during the spring. (One bag is ready for harvest in 8 days) (80G/crop) Cabbage--they have the longest growing season, however, they have a really high selling price. I reccomend you plant a few bags, but keep the bulk of your crops as potatoes. (90G/crop) ----Summer Crops 300G/Bag---- Summer crops have multiple harvest/bag Tomatoes--of all of the summer crops, tomatoes have the shortest harvest and like all crops with short growing periods, they sell for very little. Plant about half of your total summer harvest as tomatoes. (90G/crop) Corn--corn takes longer to harvest, however, is worth 30G/crop more than tomatoes. You should plant about half of your summer crop as corn. (120G/crop) ----Fall Crops 300G/bag---- Fall crops have multiple harvest/bag Eggplant--Eggplant is the sole fall crop. You should plant a modest sum of eggplant, but start concentrating on getting livestock for the winter. (60G/crop) ----Winter Crops 500G/bag---- Winter crops have one harvest/bag Strawberries--With the Greenhouse, you can plant strawberries in thw winter. I am not sure how long it takes to harvest them, but they do make a whopping 850G profit for one bag planted and watered in a 3x3 plot. (150G/crop) ======================================================================== ===== Your House ======================================================================== ===== During the course of the game, you are able to upgrade your house to include various features, most of which have a benificial purpose, and others that seem rather useless. Kitchen--Adds a kitchen unit to the left-end of your house. The kitchen has a refrigerator/freezer that you can store items in. (5000G and 450 wood) Bathroom--Adds a bathroom unit just north of the kitchen on the left end of the house. The bathroom has a bathtub that you can use to restore energy. (3000G and 300 wood) Stairway--Adds a stairway inside your house. Not sure of its purpose, may be used for something that i haven't found. (2000G and 250 wood) Greenhouse--The greenhouse is located south of the shipping bing. The greenhouse lets you plant any crop in any season other then strawberries (which can only be planted in the winter) With the greenhouse, you can also buy any seed in any season of the year. I recomend you build one ASAP. (30000G and 580 wood) Log-terrace--Puts a wooden patio behind your house. Has a picnic table, but I haven't found a real use for it. (7000G and 350 wood) Baby-bed--Puts a baby bed right in front of your bed. Probably used when you have a kid. (1000G and 150 wood) ======================================================================== ===== Planting Patterns ======================================================================== ===== There are several ways that you can plant your crops effectivly, each has its pros and cons. Rows--a row of crops would look like this XXX the advantages of a row system is that it is easy to water, however XXX it will only turn up 2/3 of the yield. I recommend this during the early stages of the game before you get the golden watering can. U-shaped--a u-shaped patter is like the row XXX but with a crop on one end of the X empty space. Still easy to water XXX the u-shaped trades in the ability to move around for one extra crop. W-shaped--similar to the u-shaped, but with XXX another empty space filled in. This XX planting pattern is complicated to XXX water with a green water can and even the silver can. However, this is the best pattern to use in the summer with the golden can, because you will have access to harvest the entire crop. 3x3--this pattern is simple to make, three rows XXX of three plants, however, you cannot water XXX the middle plant with the green or silver XXX water cans. Although you can water it with the golden can, in the summer you will not be have to harvest the center crop. After you have a golden water can, use this patter for all of you spring crops. O-shaped--this pattern is the same principle as the 3x3 XXX shaped plot and yeilds the same amound as the X X W-shaped and is slightly easier to water due to XXX its shape. To make it, simple bash the center of a 3X3 plot with your hammer and plant the seeds. ======================================================================== ===== Recipes ======================================================================== ===== During the game you can find recipes in different places. To be honest, I don't know how you can make these items (you might not be able to). As I find out the recipes and how to obtain them i will place them here. Veryberry Wine--If you give the grapes you find in the fall to Kai, he will give you the recipe in return. Fried Char--Give the Master Fisherman a big fish and he will teach you this recepie Bread Pudding--Give Elli an egg Vegetable Tomato Stwe--Give Lillia a tomato and she will teach you this Spa-Poached Eggs--Give an egg to Kent Mushroom Rice--Give a mushroom to the master carpenter Hot Spicy Wine--Give wild grapes to the bartender. Mushroom Stuffed Char--give a mushroom to one of the carpenters Cream of Turnip Stew--give the mayor's wife a turnip ======================================================================== ===== Pointers ======================================================================== ===== I have included some pointers to help you out some. I will add more in later updates. **NEVER let a day pass by without making money, you can always make something by foraging on Moon Mountain. **Always go to the festivals, not only does it give you the opporitunity to get in better standings with a girl, but you can also get rare items, such as the bottle there. **Watch your planting times. As I begin to include planting times in this FAQ, you should be careful not to plant crops too late, otherwise, they will die before you can harvest them. **Make sure that you don't over plant. If you plant too many crops, you might not have enough time in the day to water them all, much less harvest them when the time comes. **Check your mailbox often. You will get information about festivals and offers from local shops here. **The Greenhouse is very important. Build it as soon as you can because it allows you to plant any vegetable at any time of the year, plus, time doesn't pass while you are in it. ======================================================================== ===== Contributions ======================================================================== ===== EviLMyu@aol.com--for the information on Popuri. aajasap@earthlink.net--for infromation on winter crops and the greenhouse. Czosnyka Marty--for the information on the recepies ======================================================================== ===== Contact Me ======================================================================== ===== This FAQ is not totally complete. As you saw, there was a lot of information that I still have to fill in. Also, I plan on adding a walkthrough section as soon as I go through the game completly a few times. You can contact me by emailing me at: prenloe@yahoo.com Please send me your comments and suggestions, if you can tell me missing information and give me a few tips I would be most thankfull.
